Week #81 – Hold True

New Companion Elder Gutierrez

Hey Mom, it is so good to see pictures! YOU look AMAZING!!!! You are so beautiful Mom, I love you so much! You are the best mother anyone could ask for! I did get your Valentine package, thank you so much, you can be my valentine anytime, I am so thankful for You and Dad and all my family and friends, yall have helped me so much! I just got my mask today, thanks for letting me get that. It will be so useful! I am thoroughly enjoying the mission. I am so thankful for this opportunity I have to serve my Savior Jesus Christ. He is the most Merciful and Loving being ever! I love him, and my Heavenly Father. What more of blessings could we ask for than to live with Jesus Christ and Our Heavenly Father with our families. That is all we could ever ask for, and he will give it to us as we are faithful!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANE! That sounds like fun, chilling on the beach for Danes’ birthday! Awesome! I miss the beach infinitely. but its okay. Everything is going great here, my companion Elder Gutierrez is awesome, he works hard and likes to have fun, I love it. The lord has really been blessing me with great companions who i get along well with! best. I will send you a lot of pics of some things we have done recently, and of my companion and I.

Other than that how is everyone???? AUBREE? BLAKE? DEMI? AMANDA? CHASE? JAMES? AMBER? TAYLOR? DAD? I hope they are enjoying the plan of redemption. WE are here on this earth to experience joy and learn and grow. We can all have happiness at anytime, it is conditional upon our personal righteousness and our relationship with our Savior.

This week was an awesome one, filled with transfers, meetings, service, and stake conference! Stake Conference for Monroe, LA was very uplifting and they talked a ton about missionary work and respecting and helping the missionaries I loved it!

Missionary work, has been awesome lately, I have been able to experience and be apart of three wonderful people’s lives and help them enter into a covenant of baptism! Elder G and I are hoping to be able to get another one into the waters. This transfer is a 7 week one, so we are going to be working really hard and pushing to HELP people make this change in their life. The three people that got baptized were, Brenda Reeves, Brandi Majeska, and Frank Marsala. It is so wonderful to be apart of there lives. I hope I can continue to help them while I am here and be friends with them even after I leave.

I learned something really cool this week. That is– answers are everywhere in the Scriptures we just have to analyze and locate these answers, when anyone tells our church is wrong trying to use the Bible, there are answers everywhere to answer back there garbage— what a great lesson, haha, you know how I am. Let’s get to it.

Once upon a time I was bible bashing with a Pentecostal Preacher who was really cocky, and was saying that we do not believe in Christ, and that we lead people to hell. He was getting on my nerves. He started talking about how we baptize in this church is false.

For Example, this is what he said,

“Elder Corbin, we have a problem here, you see in Matthew 28:19-20 Christ gives the command to baptize ‘in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost’ I understand that your church takes this literally, why is it then that in the early days of the church which begins in Acts Ch 2, that the apostles went around baptizing contrary to Christ’s command which was ‘in the name of Jesus Christ’ ? Therefore the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is false, and you baptize wrong, and do not have prophets and apostles today.” See Acts 2:38, 8:16, 19:5.

I had a weak answer for him at that time. As did all the other previous 20 years worth of missionaries who had met with him prior. He said, “Every time I talk to yall about this, none of you can explain this. You see Mormonism is the example of Satan at work, dragging people down into hell by false baptism.” (HE is very good at railsplits, meaning he takes scriptures out of context)

Since this experience I have asked missionaries, sought and searched for an answer to this ludicrous. I have finally found an answer this week to his question, and it has built my faith tremendously, (this is why it is so important for revelation in our day).

I would reply,

“Sir, your logic is very interesting, I am thankful for the opportunity I have to defend the truth this day. I will prove to you using the Holy Bible how incorrect your interpretation is concerning this thing. Lets turn to 1 Cor. 1:10-15. You see Paul has a problem here writing to the Corinthians he says, “For it hath been declared unto me of you, that there are contentions among you…you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ” I want you to notice sir, that Paul is recognizing that people were forming little segments and saying they are Disciples of Paul or one of the others. Paul continues, “Is Christ Divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF PAUL?… I thank God that I baptized none of you… Lest any should say that I baptized in mine name.” THERE IS YOUR ANSWER; false cults were baptizing in other names. Lets turn to one of the examples you gave, Acts 19:1-5, starting at verse 3. I find it amusing that you would quote Acts 19:5 but fail to read the verses prior. You would have been a great Pharisee. Starting in verse three Paul says, “UNTO WHAT then were ye baptized? and they said, UNTO JOHNS’ BAPTISM.” Notice it says UNTO WHAT. sir lets continue. In verse 4, Paul teaches that “John did baptize with the baptism of repentance, SAYING UNTO THE PEOPLE THAT THEY BELIEVE ON HIM WHICH SHOULD COME AFTER HIM, THAT IS, ON CHRIST JESUS” Paul just taught them that they should believe in Christ Jesus and be baptized in his name, not johns. Verse 5. “When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Why was it that they were baptized again? Were they not already baptized UNTO JOHNS BAPTISM. What it meant by “unto Johns baptism” was they were baptized “in the name of John” hence false cults baptizing, which caused Paul to re-baptize them “in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” How plain can it get sir, What the scriptures are pointing out here is unto “WHOSE BAPTISM” we are to be baptized. let us return to the scripture you used earlier, Acts 2:38. It is clearly pointing out unto whose baptism we are to be baptized, “in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ” which merely points out and denotes the Church, which would be that of our Lord Jesus Christ. That we should not be baptized by a false cult in the name of John or Apollos or one of the others. You see sir, you have completely and utterly missed the mark. What’s funny about it is that Christ actually taught this in Matt. 20:23, that we must indeed, “be baptized with the baptism that I(he, Jesus Christ) am baptized with;..” therefore we know that Christ was baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, hence the command in Matt. 28., therefore we do baptize “in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ” denoting unto whose baptism we baptize, it is not to be taken literally against Jesus Christs’ command to his apostles.”

Note, I wouldn’t make him feel that dumb just to satisfy my own pride, but for here I think it would suffice. Haha. But maybe if he is a binkis, and kept being ignorant.

As you see here, I had thought and pondered over this question for a lot of my mission, I have finally found the answer thanks to some searching and help from books.

WE all come across Anti against the Church. Which sometimes does not make sense to us, but we must not give up, we must search and pray for the answers, they are there, this church is true. Christs’ doctrine and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints doctrine is all harmonious. THis is his church, God lives. NEVER LET FALSE DOCTRINE AND IGNORANT PEOPLE WHO NO NOTHING ABOUT THE BIBLE USE ONE SCRIPTURE TO ANTAGONIZE YOU!

Always hold true to the faith, what you know will always trump what you don’t know or understand. Brothers and Sisters, family, friends, these things are all true. I know that Jesus Christ lives, that Joseph Smith was chosen to restore his church and that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ. Indeed, Families can be together forever through the power of the Priesthood I am so thankful for all of you!

In the Sacred name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Week #80 To No Avail

Brandi Majeska got Baptized!!!

Hey Mom! I am in Farmerville still!! My new companion is Elder Gutierrez, he is legit! It is going to be great. Wow, there was a tornado! I think we will be alright, we are pretty far north compared to everyone else. I did not get transferred. This week will be a 7 week transfer to accommodate the MTC change for how long missionaries stay in the MTC. So we have added another week to our transfer.

This last Sunday, Brandi Majeska got baptized wooo!!! It was so awesome, during the confirmation the spirit was so strong as her husband struggled to speak the words, “receive the holy ghost”. Throughout that time I was fighting to hold back tears but it was to no avail. It was such an amazing experience. I love how much Love the Lord gives to all those who trust in him. Imagine how much suffering he went through, that we might be forgiven and receive such an amazing gift!

I only have 4 transfers left? It does not make any sense in my mind! Time truly has flown and I understand how precious this time we have to serve the Lord. I have been working hard in this area and have been giving everything I am to serve with all my heart, might, mind and strength. It has been such a blessing. The Spirit is real. I have felt and noticed the difference between missionaries and myself, when we have the spirit and when we don’t.

The Spirit enlightens our minds and helps us to become who the Lord wants us to become. We all were born with the light of Christ. It is the knowledge to know what is right and wrong. But as we make good choices our light will increase, and consequently if we make wrong ones long enough our light will dim and cease to exist. Can we ever become perfected on our own? Do we ever think that it is possible for us to be lifted to a higher state of being without outside help?

How could we? A man cannot lift himself up by his bootstraps.
Thankfully, the Lord Jesus Christ suffered for us that we could learn and progress.
“Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered”, (hebrews 5:8) through his diligence we can inturn be lifted up above our own capacity.
But what is required of us? Why do we need the Holy Ghost?

We must act as did Christ, “And I, John, saw that he received not of the fulness at the first, but received grace for grace; And he received not of the fulness at first, but continued from grace to grace, until he received a fulness.” (D&C 93:12-13) Because of the Atonement we are allowed mistakes and errors, Christ wasnt allowed error, there was no room for imperfection. I am thankful for his example, because of what he did, “-being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;”(hebrews 5:9).

But how do we become better from Christ’s atonement?
A man can only become glorified to a certain point because of his imperfection, at what point does his growth stop? How perfect can someone become being unfavorably equipped with only the Light of Christ?

Graciously God has given a gift to all those who believe in his son, and follow him. This gift is received through the ordinance of baptism by water, which brings about the baptism of fire, “the gift of the Holy Ghost.” We need the Holy Ghost that so we can be endowed with christlike attributes as we strive to become perfected. The Holy Ghost is what permanently changes our character and makes us into something greater than what we could ever become without it. It is through the Gifts the Spirit that we become like our Father in Heaven. Only through effort and determination those who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints can be endowed through God’s grace and become perfected through those gifts.

“The grace that flows from the Savior’s atoning sacrifice opens the gate to the divine road, the gifts are the vehicle and godhood is the destination. By the grace of God, the gifts come, and with the acquisition of the gifts, godhood emerges.” (Tad R. Callister, The Infinite Atonement, 277).

This is why we need the Holy Ghost. Brothers and Sisters, this is the church of Jesus Christ. Let us take courage to seek out these gifts and acquire them. Who shall deny the gifts of the spirit? All those who do not pray and ask for them. Ask Heavenly Father to bless you with gifts from the spirit. He is at the head. He leads President Thomas S. Monson by inspired revelation. He lives he loves you, he has provided a way for you to learn of him, and to become like him. It is through the impressions of his holy spirit.

If you pray and strive to establish immutable truths in your life, you will find his voice and it will lead you to this gospel, for it is his gospel, and if
ye say that this is not his gospel, judge ye, for he will show unto you at the last day with great power that it is his gospel. Ye will hear a voice saying behind thee, “this is the way, walk ye in it.”(isaiah)

I testify that by the power of the Holy Ghost you can know that these things are true! Exercise faith, test our message, read the Book of Mormon, there is nothing to lose. I fear that we get distracted by the many voices Satan puts into the world, enticing us to focus on things that are not important. Let us focus on things that are ‘essential’ and there is but few. I testify that God loves when we do what is right and is pleased. He will bless us beyond our capacity to receive. Search, ponder and pray, find out for yourself it will be worth it, your eternal happiness is at stake. In the name of Jesus Christ amen!

Week #79 SMART Goals

Hey Mother and family and friends!!!! I had a great Valentine’s Day! Life in the mission field has been great. We are continuing to teach our main investigator, Brandi Majeska. She is awesome! I love her and her family! They are great. We are hoping she will be getting baptized in the end of February or the beginning of March! Life truly is great! What a blessing it is to teach these wonderful people the gospel! I know how the gospel enlightens one’s soul for it has enlightened mine.

Recently, our mission has had a big push on planning, and planning effectively! Planning and setting goals effectively makes a huge difference! Unfortunately everyone in the mission was planning incorrectly. Planning and setting goals for ourselves and the people we teach is very difficult, but I am thankful for it! I have spent some time re-learning goal setting and how it can bless my life.

We all have goals in life. Our goals reflect our desires. We need to learn how to set and achieve righteous goals!

When we set, SMART Goals, it helps us do this.

Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timetabled

When we plan and set goals this way it helps us to persevere, and do the things we need to do to achieve these goals. I hope and pray that we can all set personal goals to become a better disciple of Jesus Christ. Each week we have the chance to partake of the Sacrament, this is a great chance for us to set a righteous goal and then to do it.

If you are;
Struggling with reading the Book of Mormon each day?
Have a hard time living a specific commandment?
Struggling with your faith?
Feel you need answers to your prayers?

Select a specific thing you need or want to change. Then, set simple actions you will take to attain that goal, and promise the lord you will DO IT! Seek for his inspiration in prayer, he will tell you what to do. Then if you promise the Lord that takes the “good intentions” out of it and turns it into and “action” that you are accountable for.

For Example, If you struggle with reading the book of Mormon each day and saying a nightly prayer. Promise the Lord you will do it, then maybe a simple step you can take is to put your copy of the scriptures over your pillow each morning, so every night you will be reminded to read. Then it will be up to you to keep your promise to the Lord to remember him, (which is what we do anyway, when we partake of the sacrament) by reading his word to you.

As we strive to become better by “small and simple means” we will experience sweet repentance, develop Christlike attributes, and experience the “peace that exceeds all understanding”.

“Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.” Alma 37: 6

I promise and testify that if we can set SMART goals in our lives we will be blessed in everything that we do! The gospel challenges us to become! So let us become who the Lord wants us to become, by following his spirit, and setting righteous goals. For cubit upon cubit is our character built, moment upon moment our lives are lived, it is how we use our time that shapes our eternity, as in the wise words of Napoleon,

“He who fears being conquered, is sure of defeat.”

Let us have the courage, the faith, the determination to succeed, trusting in God, that we can overcome all things through “him who is mighty to save”, then have the conviction and the resolve to succeed. I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT!

Then, when we get to the end of our course here in life, we can say as did Timothy,

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:”
2 Timothy 4:7

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen!

Week #78 First Investigator Ever

Frank Marsala, Elder Smith left of me, and Elder Webster right of Frank.

Hey Mom! This last week was great! Broncos won wooo! I hope Cam newton is planting some fig trees, I hear he ate dirt, #fignewtons. Haha I’m glad Manning was able to redeem himself from two years ago, yikes. thats awesome! I was able to be apart of a wonderful experience this week that was special for me! Frank Marsala was baptized! YOU REMEMBER MY FIRST INVESTIGATOR EVER! He got baptized! It was so awesome! I was able to come down to Monroe on Sat, and be here for his baptism! He was finally able to give up smoking, drinking and the big one, chewing! HE DID IT! I was so thankful for the opportunity to teach him for 6 months a year ago!! ! I am thankful to be apart of that experience! I was so proud of him! I had not seen the members in the Monroe Ward or Frank for about a year and alot of them were shocked to see me! It was awesome !! WHAT A GREAT EXPERIENCE IT WAS! The Missionaries who began teaching him again were Elder Smith and Elder Webster, both great friends of mine. They are awesome!

The lord truly does wrought miracles. As I have been giving it all I have on my mission, I have seen miracles and blessings flow. The lord truly is so kind and merciful! I am so thankful for such blessings! Can you believe it!? How incredible it is to see the atonement of Jesus Christ work in my own life and in the life of someone else! Incredible! Frank actually got baptized, the lord will never forsake us, we just need to act and trust in him!

It reminds me one of my favorite scriptures in the Book of Mormon, and it refers to all those who will trust in God.

Mosiah 24:14

“And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.”

The Lord truly loves us beyond our ability to comprehend and I hope that we can all feel of that love!
I felt so excited for Frank and I felt the peace and the Love of the savior, what a confirming witness it was for me to see him get baptized! I love it! The gospel is awesome and we got to stay on FIRE! WOO!

May the Lord bless us all and help us to draw closer to our loving God. I hope yall will all exercise faith in our savior and pray for revelation so your life will be guided by the holy ghost. Live worthy of that great gift. May the Lord bless all of us! Hey mom HAPPY VALENTINES DAY! LOVE YOU! I will look in the mail for the package. I don’t have any requests at this moment.. LOVE YOU~

Love Elder Brenan Corbin

Ps. That is funny that Nancy was thinking I was coming to her house! I WISH! I WOULD HAVE DEVOURED ALL PINK STUFF IN SIGHT! I cant wait to have those fun times again soon! 6months LETS GO! DOMINATE

Week #77 Give Your Heart

Zone Conference

Hey Mother, things are going great here. My shoes are still good, they will last until the end, they shall endure! Our investigators are working toward there goals and life is just fantastic. The atonement is real and the lord will help us in all things. I read a quote in a book this week called “The Miracle of Forgiveness” and it said,

“Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out.” Tagore expressed a similar thought in these words: “I have spent my days stringing and unstringing my instrument, while the song I came to sing remains unsung. My plea therefore is this: Let us get our instruments tightly strung and our melodies sweetly sung. Let us net die with our music still in us. Let us rather use this precious mortal probation to move confidently and gloriously upward toward the eternal life which God our Father gives to those who keep his commandments.”

My message and letter this week is simple, it consists of three things.

1. Win ( what’s important now)

When you are driving, drive. When you are at church, listen to the talks. When you are with friends, give them your time. When you are at work, work. When we focus on what we are doing we will notice the blessings of life and the Lords hand in our everyday lives. Stop thinking about other things when you are doing something different.

2. Serve

Forget yourself. The world doesn’t revolve around you. Look for unplanned opportunities to uplift someone. Why don’t you make chocolate chip cookies randomly then ring your neighbors door bell and say, “Hey I am_____ and I made these for you, and I hope that you have a good day. I know that God loves you and that he wants what is best for you. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you.” WHAT IS SO HARD ABOUT THAT, DO SOMETHING NICE FOR SOMEONE ELSE, ONCE IN A WHILE YOU BINKIS/JAYBIRD.

3. Give your Heart

If there is anything in life that you can give to anyone, it is your heart. When we give all we are to others, we will be happy!

Apply these three simple things, and watch the blessings fly and you will be singing as the days go bye!!!

Take courage to do them. To “liken” the scriptures means to make a mental bridge between understanding the doctrine and living them.

So live the gospel, and be like Christ!

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen!
